How does Kid Concept Explainer work?
Paste the concept the kid asked about (photosynthesis, inflation, why the sky is blue, long division with regrouping), pick the age band (4 to 6, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 15), and list 2 or 3 things the kid is into (Minecraft, soccer, dinosaurs, horses, Roblox). Add grade context or tone if you want. One structured pass returns eight fields: a title, an age-calibrated short explanation, an analogy that names one of the interests verbatim, a picture_in_words visual you read aloud, a try_this_at_home check with materials plus time_minutes plus what_kid_should_notice, two likely_next_questions written in the kid's voice with parent-ready answers, a parent_prep_note flagging the common wrong intuition, and an estimated_read_seconds so you know if you have time before dinner.
How is this different from asking ChatGPT?
Cold-prompting ChatGPT, parents forget the two inputs that matter most: the age band and the kid's actual interests. ChatGPT then defaults to jargon a 7-year-old cannot parse and generic factory or river analogies that land nowhere. Here the age band and interests are required fields, so the analogy names Minecraft redstone or soccer positioning verbatim instead of defaulting. The likely_next_questions field pre-answers turn 2 of the endless why chain so you are not caught flat-footed. The parent_prep_note whispers a brief before you speak (the specific wrong intuition most people carry into this concept) so you do not repeat it out loud. What if I don't know the exact age band or the concept is way outside my comfort zone?
Pick the nearest age band and the tool calibrates vocabulary and analogy density around it. You do not need to know the concept yourself to use this. The parent_prep_note names the wrong intuition most adults carry into that concept (for example, the everyday belief that heavier things fall faster, or that inflation means prices are unfair rather than more money chasing the same goods) so you do not repeat the wrong version out loud. Read the parent_prep_note first, then the explanation, then use the picture_in_words and analogy as your script. If a follow-up lands you still cannot handle, run the same tool again with the follow-up as the new concept.
What ages does it cover?
Four bands, each calibrated differently. 4 to 6 is concrete-operational: no abstractions, no mechanisms, the picture_in_words visual carries most of the weight and the analogy stays inside things they can touch (blocks, snacks, pets). 7 to 9 introduces simple cause and effect and short chains of reasoning, vocabulary still everyday. 10 to 12 is the beginning of abstract thinking: the explanation can name a mechanism (why, not just what) and the analogy can stretch beyond the physical. 13 to 15 can handle systems, tradeoffs, and named terms defined in-line, with the analogy used as a scaffold rather than the whole answer.
Which tier should I pick, Quick or Deep?
Quick (15 tokens) covers dinner-table curiosity: why is the sky blue, where does rain come from, what is a black hole, throwaway asks where a good-enough answer that lands in 30 seconds is the goal. Deep (25 tokens) is for the 8pm homework meltdown, medical or safety questions (why do I need this shot, what does a seizure feel like), and hard math or physics where getting it right actually matters. Deep uses the stronger model, spends more effort on picking an analogy that does not break down under a followup, and sharpens the parent_prep_note so the whispered brief is precise instead of general.
How much does it cost per explanation, and do I need a subscription?
No subscription. Quick is 15 tokens per explanation, Deep is 25 tokens.
